The Slovenian term barje signifies a marshy world in which peat forms from the remains of plants. The best-known marshlands in Slovenia are the Ljubljana Marshes (Ljubljansko barje), the remains of a once high marsh and the only example of a lowland marsh in our country.
The Ljubljana Marshes makes up the southern most part of the Ljubljana basin with a surface area of 163km2,of which 100km2 are meadows, around 10km2 are woods and around 40km2 are fields. The Ljubljana Marshes are economically tied to the hinterland and especially to heavily populated outskirts on the southern parts of Ljubljana, which extend into the Ljubljana Marshes, as do a number of towns such as Vrhnika and Škofljica. The southern part of the four-lane Ljubljana ring-road and a portion of the Ljubljana-Postojna motorway are also routed through the Marshes.
