The most authentic way to experience Slovenia is to go hiking in its mountains and engage in one of the most popular pastimes of Slovenians. Pokljuka is the perfect choice – a karst tableland in the Julian Alps covered with dense forests that forms part of the Triglav National Park. It is accessible by car and offers endless possibilities for quiet walks in the woods and across green pastures. In the surrounding mountains, cattle still graze like in the old days and hikers are welcomed to a glass of home made curdled milk or cottage cheese, locally produced butter, and cheese. Each mountain has its own particular charm but the one feature they all have in common are traditional wooden cottages with shingle roofs that fit perfectly into their natural environment. Tasty, aromatic bilberries grow in seemingly endless quantities here and are a real hit in summer, and the numerous medicinal herbs that cover the mountain pastures are a real treat for the eyes. For those of you who crave more excitement, Pokljuka is also a good starting point for a number of mountain trails leading into higher alpine regions. It is just as interesting in winter when its slopes are covered by a thick blanket of snow. A walk with snowshoes can be organized and cross-country skiing trails are also available nearby. During winter months biathlon races are held, including some on world cup level. The price includes
