We will start the day off with a visit to the Postojna Cave, the largest and most famous karst cave in Slovenia and the most visited cave in Europe. The cave is a network of 27 km of tunnels, galleries, and halls that have been visited by more than 31 million tourists in the past 185 years under the careful supervision of experienced tour guides. We will marvel at the cave’s captivating beauty from an electric train that runs through the tunnel system and then walk a section of it accompanied by a tour guide. If we’re lucky, we may get to see the “human fish” (Proteus anguinus), the only cave vertebrate in Europe, whose natural habitat includes a narrow area ranging from Trieste in Italy through Slovenia and Southwest Croatia to Herzegovina. We will also visit the mysterious Predjama Castle which was built into a cliff and whose many secret passages and old legends have excited the imaginations of many. The oldest part of the castle dates back to the 11th century and is called “Erazem’s Den” after the legendary robber knight who was under siege here and fought off the emperor’s army for a long time in 1484. |
